What Is The Rate Of Divorce In America?
The alarmingly high incidence of Divorce in the present world scenario has gripped the attention of scientists and sociologists the world over. Divorce in America has a much higher rate of occurrence than any other country in the world. The reason behind this is that in American and European countries individual independence is given more priority over familial or social opinion. The major sufferers of a divorce case are not the husband and wife but the children. They require attention of both the parents for their healthy growth and upbringing. It is estimated that every year around one million children in America suffer because their parents get divorced. Thus it makes good sense to look into the matter so as to save children from physical, mental, emotional and financially adverse effects of divorce.
Divorce happens because of a number of reasons. Where there is no understanding, there is no faith; where there is no faith, there is lack of communication; where there is lack of communication there are misunderstandings and where there are misunderstandings the spouses become selfish and are not ready to compromise under any circumstances. Thus the reasons are interlinked and the situation becomes extremely complicated.
It is always better to get a divorce in such situations as there is no point living together unhappily. However, spouses who have children should definitely give it a second thought. Even if a little bit of understanding can be built by communicating with each other, the children will get all the love and affection they need from both the parents. The marriage can be saved if without thinking of one's own needs and desires, the parents think more of their children's future. But still in America, the number of divorce cases is on the rise day by day and harmfully affecting their children. It is seen that most of the children in America whose parents are divorced, fall prey to drug addictions. They suffer more from health and emotional problems, have higher suicidal rates and suffer more from mental problems than those with normal parents. A study shows that children of divorce parents perform poorly in their studies and have higher drop out rates in college. Such children are also victims of poverty. This happens because after divorce their income drops by 50 percent, and the children who were not poor earlier move into poverty. According to a research in America, only 42 percent of the children live in a first marriage family while the rest live in a two parent family. Divorce has a profound effect on society, especially the young children. They, instead of becoming responsible citizens of the country, are badly affected by the traumatic experiences of parental divorce. Thus, looking at the above consequences, something should be done to decrease the causes of Divorce in America. This will save millions of children from the adverse effects of divorce, and they will receive love and affection from both their parents. |
